How to make Westmorland sweet pie:
Served at Christmas, this is an example of a traditional mince meat filling which contains real meat.


1/2 cup currants
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup sultanas
1/2 cup mixed peel
1/2 cup diced lamb
1/2 teaspoon mixed spice
just over 1/4 pint water

pastry ingredients:
2 cups flour
4 level tablespoons lard
pinch salt
(see measure conversions for more information)


- Put al the filling ingredients into a pie dish.
- Cover with foil and cook for about 1 hour at 330 degrees Fahrenheit (see temperature conversions).
- Make the shortcrust pasty (using quantities shown above).
- Take the pie dish from the oven.
- Remove the foil lid.
- Roll out the pastry and use to cover the meat in the pie dish.
- Make a slit with a knife in the middle of the pastry top.
- Return to the oven and cook at 425 degrees Fahrenheit until the pastry is a light golden brown.
