How to make Viennese bonbons:
A sweet recipe that combines the rich tastes of fondant and marzipan paste, which is also know as almond icing.



Ingredients

fondant
marzipan paste (almond icing)
a few drops of rose water
a few drops orange flower water
2 contrasting natural food colors
(see measure conversions for more information)

Method

- Work the rose water into the fondant, together with two or three drops of your chosen natural food coloring.
- Work the orange flower water into the marzipan and a few drops of your other chosen natural food coloring.
- Roll out the fondant and divide it into equal halves.
- Roll out the marzipan, place it on one half of the fondant, and press the remainder of the fondant on top, so that you have a sandwich of marzipan and fondant.
- Then cut in shapes and leave to dry for 24 hours.

Land For Food Production


I wonder just how much land it would take to feed a family of, say, 4? I know that if my family didn't buy fruit and veg we wouldn't have enough to eat but is self sufficiency down to amount of land or method of growing? Last year I overcrowded my small veg plot with counter-productive results like mildew and snail infestation that went unnoticed until we came to pick the tomatoes (all holes!). I wonder if anyone has ever been totally self providing or whether the local market and barter played...
