How to make syrup loaf:
A real wartime rib sticker for the cold weather, this syrup loaf is quickly and easily prepared from very cheap ingredients. To cut the cost even more, half of the milk can be replaced with water.


4oz self-raising flour
1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
pinch salt
2 tablespoons warmed golden syrup
1/4 pint milk
(see measure conversions for more information)


- Sift the flour with the bicarbonate of soda and salt.
- Heat the syrup and milk.
- Pour the syrup and milk mixture over the flour.
- Beat well.
- Pour into a greased 1lb loaf tin.
- Bake in a hot oven for 30 minutes or until firm to the touch.
