Malt Loaf Recipe

This is a recipe for malt loaf, a cake which will keep extremely well and is best eaten cut in slices and spread with butter.


  • 4 cups self raising flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 4 tablespoons any dried fruit
  • 2 tablespoons malt extract
  • 1 tablespoon warmed golden syrup
  • 1/4 pint milk
  • 1/4 pint water
(see measure conversions for more information on quantites)


  1. Put the milk, water, syrup and malt into a pan and warm.
  2. Remove from the heat.
  3. Sieve the flour and salt into a large basin and stir in the fruit and sugar.
  4. Add the liquid and beat well.
  5. Put the mixture into a greased 2lb loaf tin and bake at 150 degrees Centigrade (see temperature conversions) for 1 hour.

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 60 minutes

Yield: 1 loaf


This is delicious toasted with butter and marmite :0) I used dates and apricots!!

I have been looking for this recipe for many years. I hope I can find malt extract here in Canada. I will let you know.

300F gas mark 2 140C
312F gas mark 1.5 150C
325F gas mark 3 300C

Remember that ovens do vary.

the oven temerature in the malt loaf recipe does not correspond with the conversion chart, 140C = 300 F
158C = 325 F
There is No 150 C on your chart and nothing in between on the oven
