How to make brown sugar cookies:
Sweet, spicy and fruity, these vanilla flavored cookies are tempting at any time of day.



Ingredients

1 cup all purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
3/4 cup salad oil
1/4 cup water
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup raisins
(see measure conversions for more information)

Method

- Sift the first five ingredients together.
- Make a well in the middle of the mixture and add the brown sugar, salad oil, water, eggs and vanilla extract.
- Mix until smooth.
- Fold in the raisins.
- Put teaspoonfuls onto a greased baking sheet.
- Leave plenty of space between each spoonful.
- Bake in a moderate oven for 12-13 minutes.

Land For Food Production


I wonder just how much land it would take to feed a family of, say, 4? I know that if my family didn't buy fruit and veg we wouldn't have enough to eat but is self sufficiency down to amount of land or method of growing? Last year I overcrowded my small veg plot with counter-productive results like mildew and snail infestation that went unnoticed until we came to pick the tomatoes (all holes!). I wonder if anyone has ever been totally self providing or whether the local market and barter played...
