Athol Brose Recipe - Beverage Recipes

How to make Athol Brose:

A warming alcoholic drink for you to try.

Ingredients

1 wineglassful of whisky
1 teaspoon honey
enough milk for your taste
1 well-beaten egg

Method

- Heat the milk in a saucepan so that it reaches a comfortable drinking temperature.
- Put all the ingredients into a strong tumbler and mix well.
- Serve immediately.

As a matter of fact many old cookery books give variations on this egg, milk, honey, whisky drink and call it Athol Brose with no mention of oats. What you call the "real thing" is in fact highly alcoholic and said not to be particulary nice. Here is such a recipe:

Put 1 handful of oatmeal into a bowl, cover with cold water and leave overnight. Strain off the water and measure it. Add an equal quantity of runny honey. Whisk together. Then add a quantity of whisky equal to the initial amount of water. You can drink this straight away or bottle it. It should be drunk on St. Andrews Day.

This is some kind of egg-nog, not Athol Brose which is make with oatmeal (porridge). There are plenty of authoritative sources for the real thing, so why post this?
