Plants need protection
from; Extreme weather; insect pests; weeds and animals. In the
organic garden, barriers and traps are used instead of harmful
pesticides against insect attack. There are a number of products
available on the market which can achieve these goals, some of
which are available in The Green Chronicle Online Shop.
Enviromesh - a fine mesh that can prevent many insects from
reaching the plants and offers some protection against cold and
wind. Enviromesh allows water to reach the plants.
Envirofleece - this is the product of choice to protect plants
from frost and bitter winds. Envirofleece also allows water to
permeate.
Cloches - These range in size and design from very small to
extremely large (i.e. polytunnel). Cloches extend the growing
season and can afford protection from some pests and animals. The
materials use to make cloches range from flexible plastics to
rigid plastics and glass.
Slug traps - these are a pesticide free trapping method of ridding
the garden of slugs and snails.
Copper Tape - this gives slugs and snails an electric shock and so
prevents them from going near the plants protected be the tape.
Beneficial Insects - Ladybird larvae and lacewing larvae can help
to rid the garden of aphids which can decimate crops and
encourage disease.
