A Short History of Tea:


Although all the ingredients in these beauty recipes are natural, remember that it is still possible to be allergic to anything applied to the skin. DO NOT USE ANYTHING NUT BASED ON YOUR SKIN IF YOU HAVE A NUT ALLERGY. To test other ingredients make up a very small amount of the recipe you intend to use. Wash and gently dry a small patch of skin inside your elbow. Apply a little of the mix to the skin and leave for 48 hours. If you experience any redness or swelling DO NOT USE THE BEAUTY RECIPE AT ALL.

The habit of drinking tea was introduced to Europe from China in the seventeenth century. Although at first tea was very expensive it became popular among the rich, leisured classes. Whole industries grew up to produce tea cups, saucers, spoons, teapots, sugar tongs, bowls, jugs and caddies.

As it became more widely drunk so tea became cheaper and the habit spread to poorer people. Eventually tea became regarded as the British national drink.

Because of the enthusiasm for the new drink all herbal infusions became know as teas. Traditionally herbs such as chamomile, peppermint, sage, thyme and many more were steeped in boiling water and drunk for specific medicinal purposes. The new craze and the traditional remedies became fused and even broths of chicken or beef were referred to as tea.

Some authorities claim that tea, especially green tea, contains anti-oxidants and is thus beneficial to health. There are however some concerns relating to drinking large amounts of caffeine, a powerful stimulant which is contained in tea.

A wide ranges of herbal tea bags is now available on the market and many of them are delicious. It is also quite possible to brew your own teas making them specific to your requirements and taste.

Here are a few recipes for traditional infusions and teas.

To make an average strength tea use 3 teaspoons of crushed fresh herbs to one teacup of boiling water or one teaspoon of dried herbs to one teacup of boiling water. Pour the water onto the herbs, cover and in most cases leave to stand for 5 minutes. Strain and drink.

Chamomile Tea
this tea is supposed to help give a restful night's sleep. Use only the flowers and allow to brew for 3-4 minutes.

Marigold Tea
Use the petals of the flower and add a little lemon and honey to this tea to improve the flavour.

Thyme Tea
Make thyme tea from the leaves and the flowers.

Dandelion Tea
This tea is made from the leaves. It is said to have a diuretic effect and to ease the pain of rheumatism.

Lemon Balm
This tea is delicious with a little sugar or honey. It may help to soothe a tension headache.

Peppermint is supposed to be calming to the stomach and comforting when you have a cold. It makes a minty, refreshing drink.
