It could be that your top New Year's beauty resolution is to eat more healthily and maybe to shed a few pounds. The best intentions of only over-indulging on Christmas Day and Boxing Day inevitably lapse into packing away too much party food and too many drinks before the festive days and then days (if not weeks) of finishing up cake, mince pies and left over drinks afterwards.

We probably all know about having a daily helping of at least five different fruits and vegetables. We are also all probably aware of just how difficult this can be. A really good way of increasing your fruit intake is to drink a delicious homemade fruit smoothie in the morning. Here is an excellent recipe to start with but you can experiment with all your favourite fruits and even try a few exotic ones.

Fruit Smoothie

Ingredients

1/4 cup (half a banana) chopped banana (approx 50 calories)
1/4 cup (a handful of strawberries) fresh strawberries (approx. 40 calories)
1/2 cup (1/4 pint) skimmed milk (approx 50 calories)
1 cup (1/2 pint) low fat yogurt (approx 150 calories)

Method

Simply blend all the ingredients together until smooth and either refrigerate to chill or drink immediately.

Old fashioned though it may sound it is well worth eating three regular meals a day with maybe a fruit snack mid-afternoon. Keep the fat content of your meals moderate and try to eat unrefined carbohydrates such as brown rice and wholemeal spaghetti. Choose lean protein and plenty of fruit and vegetables. A pint of skimmed milk or semi-skimmed milk per day is a good idea. The point about eating regularly is that it really does prevent you from getting to the point of hunger where you will just grab any food to make you feel better. As an added bonus, making the effort to eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables really helps to fill you up and calm down the craving for chocolate and chips.

Remember that moderation in all things is always the wisest course, even when it comes to eating healthily. Make healthy changes slowly, change bad habits for good ones and do not be put off by setbacks.
