Many people are concerned about the health implications of using conventional deodorants which contain aluminium
chlorohydrate, alcohol and parabens. As a result you can now find a range of deodorants that are made from natural ingredients.
The ingredients include zinc salts which tend not to be irritating; alunite which is a naturally
occurring non-toxic mineral; and mineral salt. Some of these are infused with herbal products like peppermint, thyme, rosemary, lavender and witch hazel. These herbs
have been used in bathing for hundreds of years.
Some natural deodorants are simply a block of mineral salt with no perfumes or additives at all. One such product is made from Himalayan salt which when rubbed onto wet skin leaves a microscopic layer of bacteria and fungus killing minerals. It is a very good alternative to conventional deodorants and very simple to use. It comes in the form of a bar about the same size as a bar of soap. After washing the underarm skin is left wet and then the deodorant stone is rubbed on the skin and left to dry. The mineral salt stops bacteria from multiplying and therefore prevents the formation of body odour. The effect lasts for 24 hours. With this particular deodorant which has no masking perfume it is necessary to wash the armpit very thoroughly. It is also effective for smelly feet where the problem is fungal.
