Makeup For Your Eyes

Mountain Rose Herbs
Mountain Rose Herbs offers a wide range of dried herbs and spices.

The eyes and eyebrows are probably the most expressive features of the face. They are the main areas we look at when we speak to each other so they are bound to be noticed. There is a huge range of make-up available to enhance the eyes and brows: eye shadow in just about every possible shade to colour the eyelids, mascara in browns, black, greys, greens, blues and clear and eyeliner and brow colours in a similarly wide range of colours.

The most usual colours for eye make up are those that compliment and reflect the colour of the eyes so most eye shadow is green, blue, brown or grey. mascara and eyeliner colours can also match eye colour or they can just reflect the normal colour of the hairs of the brows and lashes. it is quite possible however to buy eye shadow in just about every colour. shades of red, yellow, gold, silver, copper and even black are on the market and many colours contain glitter. there are also unusual colours in mascara: plums, greens, blues, metallics. Similar colours are available in eyeliner. Brow makeup rarely deviates from the norm and usually the aim is to darken to a more definite brown or black.

Eye shadow comes as a powder with a small applicator or brush. Sometimes several colours can be bought together  in a palette or otherwise colours are available separately. it is also available as an oil-based cream which is very good for drier skins. Wax-based sticks (like crayons) are another option but if the texture isn't "free2 enough the skin can be pulled and stretched when they are applied. Liquid eyeshadow comes in a bottle with an applicator. this product is easy to use (especially the cream to powder formulation) and it gives a lovely finish.

Eye shadow should be applied over foundation and powder and then followed by eyeliner and mascara. How the products are used is very much up to the individual; Eye makeup can be as over or understated as you like depending on taste and social situation. Generally speaking the colour of eye makeup should be be chosen to flatter hair, eye and complexion colours but sometimes colours can be chosen simply to go with a special outfit.

Mascara is available in many different colours but probably black is the most popular and flattering shade. It is available in waterproof form which means that hopefully you can swim whilst wearing it. There is a mascara which contains tiny filaments that help to build up the thickness of the lashes. Mascara really needs to be removed with a special cleanser using a clean cotton wool pad for each eye and avoiding dragging the delicate skin.

Eyelash curlers are a great way of perking up your eyelashes before applying mascara. Always apply mascara to the upper lashes first. Make the first stroke downwards on the top of the lashes and then brush the lashes upwards from underneath. Apply the mascara with short zigzagging movements to prevent the lashes from clogging. Use the same zigzag movement to apply mascara to the lower lashes but just use the tip of the wand. Give the lashes plenty of time to dry, don't blink too soon or you'll smudge the mascara onto your skin. Full false eyelashes can be fun but they can look a bit over the top. A good alternative is single lashes which are applied to the outer edges of the natural lashes.

Eyeliner is available in liquid form with either a brush or sponge applicator. It is also available in a pencil form. Liquid eyeliner can be a little difficult to use but a really fine brush can help. Pencils are easier but should be kept sharp. An even simpler way of achieving a soft definition for the eyes is to use eyeshadow as eyeliner applied with a cotton bud.

The eyebrows are very important to the overall look and balance of the face. Any plucking of the brows  should be undertaken with great caution and preferably with professional help. Once eyebrows have been over plucked it is very difficult to grow them back to their original shape. It is not always easy to shape your eyebrows properly when you are doing it yourself. Use a clean brush to remove any powder from the brows. Brush upwards and keep them in place with a clear eyebrow gel. If you wish to add a little colour definition  to your brows you can use a powder applied with a brush or alternatively eyebrow pencil. Make sure the pencil is nice and sharp and then feather in tiny lines to mimic eyebrow hairs. Soften the lines gently with a clean brush or cotton bud.

The eyes and brows are such important features that it makes sense to present them as attractively as possible. Well-groomed eyebrows and beautifully defined eyes are very flattering to the whole face and they say so much about you and how you feel about yourself. Experiment and practise, give yourself plenty of time and you should be able to achieve an eye makeup that is second to none.
