Although all the ingredients in these beauty recipes are natural, remember that it is still possible to be allergic to anything applied to the skin. DO NOT USE ANYTHING NUT BASED ON YOUR SKIN IF YOU HAVE A NUT ALLERGY. To test other ingredients make up a very small amount of the recipe you intend to use. Wash and gently dry a small patch of skin inside your elbow. Apply a little of the mix to the skin and leave for 48 hours. If you experience any redness or swelling DO NOT USE THE BEAUTY RECIPE AT ALL.

Bathtime luxury doesn't have to be all about brightly coloured chemical bubbles and synthetic smells. Herbs have played their part in the tub for many centuries and they are not only a cheaper alternative to the products in the supermarket but they are also kind to the skin and deliciously perfumed.

Make an infusion or decoction of your chosen herb or herbs and add it to your bath. Chopped fresh or dry herbs can be put into a muslin bag and hung from the tap so that the hot water runs through the herbs releasing the oils and perfume.

Use after a days gardening. It helps to ease aching muscles.


Has a beautiful perfume and cleansing qualities.


Has a gorgeously clean perfume.


Really delicious in a bath and said to be a natural deodorant.


Has a chrysanthemum-like scent and is renowned for its ability to relax and calm.

Muslin Oat Bag

A Skin-soothing addition to your bath. Use herbs of your choice.


1 small muslin bag
3 tablespoons medium oatmeal
3 tablespoons dried herbs
length of ribbon


- Fill the muslin bag with the oatmeal and herbs.
- Secure the neck of the bag with the ribbon.
- Allow the hot tap water to run through the bag.

Soapwort Wash

A natural, gentle herbal soap for you to try in your bath.


1/2oz soapwort leaves
1oz soapwort root, washed
1 pint bottled water


- Put all the ingredients into a saucepan.
- Bring to the boil.
- Simmer for 4 minutes.
- Cool and strain.
- Bottle and store in the fridge.
- Use about a quarter of the quantity in one bath.

Muslin Rose Bag

For a really luxurious touch try a rose bath.

rose petals, preferably red and not treated with pesticide
length of ribbon


- Put the rose petals into the muslin bag.
- Secure the neck of the bag with the ribbon.
- Allow the hot tap water to run over the bag.

There is a wide choice of beautifully perfumed herbs which can transform the ordinary bath. The herbs can be mixed (try lavender and thyme) for different effects and used fresh or dried.

Plant herbs with bathtime in mind. Dry them during the hot summer months and then bring them back to life during the winter in a hot fragrant bath.
