Aromatherapy is an alternative therapy in which the diluted essential oils of plants are used in healing massage. it is said that this treatment can help may afflictions of both mind and body.

The essential oils are obtained from roots, stalks, seeds, sap, nuts, leaves or bark depending on the plant. Rose oil is the most expensive requiring tons of petals to make a small amount of oil whereas the orange tree yields three different oils, one from the blossom (neroli), one from the leaves (petigrain) and one from the peel of the fruit (orange).

Although they are called oils the substances, obtained by the process of distillation, are watery fluids. some are clear and others are coloured. It is claimed that essential oils can be absorbed into the body through the skin and are thus capable of influencing health . The oil is eventually excreted through the lungs, skin and bladder.

The benefits of essential oils are not confined to massage. They can be used in baths, burners, in room sprays and inhalations.

These methods of delivery are supposed to bring different benefits. Basil oil added to a bath is said to lift the mood whereas when added to a carrier oil and massaged into the body it may help to relieve muscular discomfort.
