History
Marjoram was historically used as a food preservative and as a remedy for colds and sore throats. Dried, ground marjoram used to be used as snuff.

Growing pattern
Perennial.

Seeds
Buy Sweet Marjoram Seeds (Organic and Non-Organic) from The Green Chronicle (Pay in £, $US, Euro).

How to grow
Sow the seed in April. Marjoram will also grow from rooted cuttings.

Soil condition/position
Marjoram is slow to mature but if sown in a sunny position it should flower during its first summer. It can be grown in a container.

Appearance
Marjoram grows to a height of 45cm. It has a sweet spicy taste but is milder than oregano.

Uses
Use as Oregano.

Land For Food Production


I wonder just how much land it would take to feed a family of, say, 4? I know that if my family didn't buy fruit and veg we wouldn't have enough to eat but is self sufficiency down to amount of land or method of growing? Last year I overcrowded my small veg plot with counter-productive results like mildew and snail infestation that went unnoticed until we came to pick the tomatoes (all holes!). I wonder if anyone has ever been totally self providing or whether the local market and barter played...
