White Sauce Recipe

A very good basic sauce which can be served as it is or with the addition of cheese, parsley and other sweet or savoury ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 2 level tablespoon butter
  • 1 heaped tablespoon plain flour
  • half pint cold milk
  • salt and pepper
(see measure conversions for more information on quantites)

Method

  1. Put the butter into a heavy-bottomed pan.
  2. Soften over a very low heat.
  3. Add the flour.
  4. Using a wooden spoon mix the flour and butter together to form a smooth paste.
  5. Remove from the heat.
  6. Very gradually begin to incorporate the milk into the flour and butter paste.
  7. Make sure that there are no lumps in the sauce.
  8. Return to a gentle heat.
  9. Stirring all the time, gradually add the rest of the milk.
  10. Bring the sauce to the boil.
  11. Still stirring, boil gently for about 2 minutes.
  12. Remove from the heat and season to taste.
  13. At this point you can add any other flavoring such as cheese.

Cook Time: 15 minutes

love this recipe so easy and taste great try it with blue cheese YUM!
